Running at the challenging, high-speed Road Atlanta circuit for the first time in his short career, Gooden snagged the pole for Saturday’s first race of the weekend with a new lap record of just over 107 mph in his Quantum Van Diemen.

In the race, Gooden and championship points leader Robert La Rocca traded the lead repeatedly throughout the 18-lap contest before La Rocca edged away to a 1.1-second victory. Gooden’s runner-up result was the best of his still-young F2000 career.

“I can’t complain for it being my first time at Road Atlanta,” Gooden said at the finish. “It was a pretty tight battle for the lead, and Robert raced me close and hard, but clean. I’m really starting to get a better understanding of how to drive this car.”

For Sunday’s second race of the weekend, the qualifying results were reversed, with Gooden starting on the outside of the front row, alongside La Rocca. After a four-wide run to the first turn at the start, the contest again turned into another duel between Gooden and La Rocca until a mid-race full-course caution.

Shortly after the restart, contact with another car sent Gooden off course. He returned to the track in fifth, but clawed his way back to third, and his second podium finish of the weekend.

“On that restart, I learned you can’t go around the outside of Turn One,” Gooden said. “It was a lot of hard work to get back on the podium at the end.”

In 2011, Gooden went four-for-four in Quantum’s F1600 Van Diemen Honda, winning two races apiece at Mid-Ohio and Watkins Glen, his only appearances in the series. He also started from the pole in three of the four races, and set fastest race laps in three of the four rounds. These were his first open-wheel races, after just one year of sedan racing in the 2010 Jetta TDi Cup.

The 14-race 2012 F2000 Champions Series resumes later this month with the May 25-26 double-header weekend at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut.

Gooden Goes F2000 With Quantum
Breakout Star from 2011 F1600 to Chase F2000 Championship

Oklahoma City, OK (February 22, 2012) – Wyatt Gooden, the surprise star of the new F1600 Formula F Championship Series last year, will move up to the F2000 Championship Series in 2012, paired once again with Quantum Racing Services of Oklahoma City.

These also were his first open-wheel races, after just one year of sedan racing, in the 2010 iRacing Jetta TDi Cup.

“Last year was incredible, working with Quantum and the results we achieved in F1600 really put my name on the map,” Gooden said, “But now I’m looking forward to remaining with Quantum and taking the next step up the ladder. We tested the F2000 at the end of last year and I loved the additional speed. I can’t wait for the 2012 season to get started!”

This year, Wyatt will campaign a Quantum Van Diemen Zetec in the 14-race F2000 Championship Series, which starts April 14 at Virginia International Raceway.

“Wyatt’s ‘immediate’ success last year was the result of a lot of hard work by both he and the team,” said Wendell Miller, Quantum owner and team principal. “That being said, it was quickly apparent that he is ready for the next level. Wyatt did a great job of adapting to the F2000 car at the test we ran last November, and we are really excited about the coming season.”

Starting out in karts at age 10, on a local track near his Cleveland-area home, Gooden soon graduated to the national WKA karting circuit, where he became a regular podium finisher.

He discovered the growing world of online racing in 2004 and then got his first big break while taking part in the iRacing Jetti TDi Series. Gooden bested 1,163 competitors to win the online championship, then excelled during a three-day evaluation at Las Vegas International Raceway to earn a full season of real world competition in the TDi Cup for 2010. Two race victories, at Mid-Ohio and Autobahn; another pair of podium finishes at Road America and the Amozoc circuit in Mexico; and four more top-10 finishes in the 10-race championship saw Gooden finish third overall and was named series Rookie of the Year – all in his first year of car racing.

Last year, Gooden’s four F1600 victories, his only appearances in the series, was enough to earn the 22-year-old sixth in the final drivers’ championship standings and first in the eformulacarnews.com F1600 series year-end driver rankings.

Quantum has been a leader in the development of the Honda Fit engine for F1600 competition, completing the first Van Diemen Honda package for SCCA Club Racing in 2010. In addition to its four pro series victories with Gooden in 2010, the team scored Honda’s first SCCA National Club Racing victory in a multi-car field last year at Motorsports Park Hastings in Nebraska.

In 2010, Quantum’s most recent season in F2000, the team took Australian series rookie Dan Erickson to two race wins, three second-place finishes and three poles in six races together.

Quantum plans a multi-car professional open-wheel racing program for 2012, with entries in both the F2000 Series Championship and the F1600 Formula F Championship Series. The team will make additional driver announcements in the near future.

Just a couple of months prior to this weekend I was invited to attended the final segment of the USA Scholarhship shootout, which was a great experience. Just being there with kids who've been racing formula cars all season, and here I am posting competitive times on what was esentially a go kart track. It was reassuring to know that I was at a competitive pace with the least experience. I didn't get to go to England, which was a little dissapointing, but life goes on!

Anyway, this past weekend at Watkins Glen, I had something to prove. Right from the first practice session I was determined to do what i know I'm capable of. No mistakes, no off tracks, spins. Just a perfect weekend in very challenging conditions. A damp first practice just getting a feel for the circuit on slicks, second practice under heavy rain and windy conditions, then finally learning the limits of the car and track in the dry during qualifying. It just couldn't have gone better. Unfortunately sundays two victories were overshadowed by the death of an amazing person, Dan Wheldon which we learned later in the day at the series awards banquet.

Dan was a true racer who absolutely lived for the limit and couldn't be happier doing what he did for a living. An amazing person on and off the track. RIP Dan Wheldon!

From www.f1600series.com;
Watkins Glen, NY – Wyatt Gooden remained perfect in F1600 competition, taking his fourth win of 2011 in just four starts, and his second win of the day at Watkins Glen for Quantum Racing Services in a Van Diemen/Honda. The bigger story however, was the inaugural Championship, which went to Bill Valet, who finished third in a nail-biting slip-streaming battle among a number of cars, including closest points rival Tim Kautz, who had to settle for sixth place in the season finale.

“That race … I can’t believe it,” said Valet, driving a Swift/Ford. “It’s the closest to on the edge I’ve ever been. We were going all out, wheels on the grass, wheels interlocked, it was Formula F racing the way it should be. I had to drive way aggressively and keep as many cars as I could behind me.”

Wyatt Gooden commented: “That was another good one. I have the track down 100 percent now and really tried to push myself. Chris (Keller) pressured me on the start but after the restart I pulled a gap and the pressure was off.”

An early race full course caution flew for Chris Keller, who got turned around in the bus-stop chicane and needed to be retrieved. Keller started second.

Ryan Leach finished second for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing in the Spectrum/Honda for the third straight race. Jim Goughary came home fourth, with Jeremy Grenier close behind ahead of Kautz, Art Foster, Colin Thompson, Forrest Hull and Steve Oseth.

In the final standings, Valet and Kautz are one and two, followed by Jim Goughary, Art Foster, Colin Thompson, Wyatt Gooden, Caitlin Johnston, Forrest Hull, John Robinson and Steve Oseth.

Kautz, driving the No. 88 Piper/Ford, added: "You can't win them all, that's the way it goes. I did not have the power to run up front, we didn't have the motor to play this weekend."

The race for the SOS Children’s Villages Cup went to Valet, who amassed the most points over four races at Watkins Glen.

The season-long CellMark Paper Hard Charger Award was clinched by Ed Callo, who improved 30 places throughout the season.

Colin Thompson won the end-of-season Alegra Motorsports F2000 Championship Series test award, which goes to the highest placing driver in the final standings under the age of 21. Thompson’s best finish of the year came at Lime Rock Park, where he notched his first career podium in the No. 5 Swift/Honda.

The inaugural season of F1600 competition saw four different race winners, engine equality with both Honda and Ford powerplants, and 50 different drivers scoring Championship points over the 10 race tour.

The victory gave the 22-year-old from suburban Cleveland a sweep of both Formula F races this weekend at Mid-Ohio, the first time this has been accomplished in the brief, six-race history of the series.

Driving for Quantum Racing Services with support from Chris Miles’ Starting Grid, Inc. and iRacing.com, Gooden started from the outside of the front row, in second, as he and pole qualifier Martin quickly broke away from the rest of the 25-car starting field. For the next 15 laps, the pair traded the lead a total of five times before a late-race caution on Lap 16 brought the race to an early conclusion from the scheduled 18-lap distance.

“The Van Dieman Honda was great today, and it was a fun race with Mitch [Martin],” Gooden said at the finish. “We had a real battle, but we both raced clean and respected each other, which made it even more enjoyable. I can’t believe we pulled off two wins in our first weekend of Formula F racing. This is such a strong series, and the racing was everything I hoped it would be. Thanks to the guys at Quantum, Chris Miles and iRacing.com. None of this would be possible without them.”

“Throughout the weekend, Wyatt did everything we expected of him – and more,” said Miles, who formed Starting Grid organization to assist the advancement of minorities with their prospective motorsports careers. “I’m not sure how we could have even dreamed of anything better for his debut in Formula F, and with Starting Grid. He demonstrated his potential as a future star of the sport. I have to thank American Honda, as their support provided a critical boost to Starting Grid, and to i.Racing for their continued commitment to helping Wyatt with his career ambitions.”

Starting out in karts at age 10, Gooden soon graduated to the national WKA karting circuit. He discovered the growing world of online racing in 2004 and then got his first big break while taking part in the iRacing Jetta TDi Series. Gooden bested 1,163 competitors to win the online championship and earn a full season of real world competition in the TDi Cup for 2010. Two race victories and a pair of podium saw Gooden finish third overall and was named series Rookie of the Year – all in his first year of car racing.

Quantum Racing Services is headed by veteran Wendell Miller, with more than 35 years in the sport and success at all levels from club racing to IndyCars. In 2010, the team took rookie F2000 Championship Series driver Dan Erickson to two race wins, three second-place finishes and three poles in six races. “It was a pleasure to work with Wyatt this weekend. He learned and progressed every time we put him out on the track,” Miller said. “It’s exactly what you hope to see in a young driver.”

Starting Grid, Inc., founded by New Albany, Indiana native Chris Miles, works to diversify the motorsports industry by developing and implementing motorsports programs that have crossover appeal and capitalize on the growing interest in the sport from minority demographics. A former professional racer and instructor, Miles became the first African-American to host a national racing magazine show, “Inside CART”, on both Fox Sports Net and ESPN2. He also is an award-winning producer of “Black History Month” vignettes for SPEED Channel.

iRacing.com is the world’s premier online race simulation service. Founded in 2004 by Dave Kaemmer (co-founder of the Papyrus Group) and John Henry (principle owner of the Boston Red Sox and co-owner of Roush Fenway Racing), iRacing features more than two dozen precisely-modeled race cars including the IndyCar Dallara, NASCAR Sprint Cup Chevrolet Impala and Williams-Toyota FW 31, along with laser-scanned versions of nearly fifty of the world’s foremost race tracks. In addition to more than 30 series of its own, Racing administers and co-sanctions professional online racing series with NASCAR, GRAND-AM and IndyCar. This summer will see the highly-anticipated release of iRacing 2.0 with its revolutionary new tire model, McLaren Electronics Atlas Express telemetry system, night racing at selected tracks and a variety of developments designed to enhance private league racing.

2011 brings lots of new opportunities that I'm capitalizing on every day. You can currently find me in the Grand AM paddock working for APR Motorsports promoting the Perfect Pedal, all the while I'm striving harder than ever to get back into a race car where I can once again show my talents. It's no secret that my heart is in open wheel racing and my goals are set on the Road to Indy. Lack of website updates doesn't mean I'm lacking commitment, as a matter of fact I've been eating, sleeping, and breathing this stuff for the last few months. I'm eager to announce some official news soon, let's stay positive we CAN make this happen with persistance!

Abed in Amozoc, Mexico. With his second wire-to-wire victory this afternoon, Mobley also clinches the 2010 Jetta TDI Cup title, on the strength of two wins, two poles and seven top-five appearances this season.

“What a fantastic weekend,” said Mobley after the race. “I came to Mexico in fifth place in the Championship, so I knew I had my work cut out for myself. Everything seemed to fall into place and things just went perfectly. On the restart this afternoon, I made sure to stay calm and patient and make sure I drove with a level head. I did just that and it worked out for me, as I was able to keep the lead and go on to win the race. It’s a great feeling to be the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Champion and after this weekend, it just goes to show – it’s never over until the final lap.”

Series rookie, Wyatt Gooden finished the race in second and in doing so, earned Rookie of the Year honors for the 2010 season. Puebla native, Juan Pablo Sierra Lendle finished third, marking his second podium result of the weekend at his home track. Orizaba, Mexico native Juan Pablo Delgado was right behind Sierra Lendle in fourth place and rookie Kevin Gleason rounds out the top-five.

After ten races this year, Mobley sits at the top of the point standings with 343 points. Sierra Lendle finished the season in second place with 322 points and Gooden came in third in his rookie year with 316 points. Just one point behind Gooden, was another rookie, Jarvis Gennari who finished tenth in today’s race and series veteran, Jake Thompson earned a fifth place finish in the Championship. Gleason finished sixth in the overall point standings and third in the rookie point standings.

“It’s been a great season,” said Clark Campbell, Motorsports Manager, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “I think this was the most competitive field we’ve had and we’ve seen ultra competitive racing at every event. Our goal of developing young up-and-coming talent has certainly come to fruition. Congratulations to JD (Mobley) for a tremendous weekend; he kept his composure despite all of the pressure and he absolutely deserves the Series title. All of the racecars used this season were produced at the Volkswagen factory just miles from the track in Puebla, so it’s definitely fitting that the city was able to host the Jetta TDI Cup’s season finale in Mexico.”

About the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup

The SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup was launched in 2008 as way to introduce clean diesel technology to the U.S. market and develop the best of motorsport’s up-and-coming talent. During the season, young, up and coming drivers (between ages 16-26) compete on road courses around North America in identical factory-prepared clean diesel powered Jetta TDI’s. Each driver competing in the Series earns a professional racing license from SCCA Pro Racing at the conclusion of the season. In addition to more than $50,000 in prize money at stake during the season, the Series Champion receives Volkswagen factory career advancement support with a value up to $100,000.

The Jetta TDI Cup car is powered by a 2.0-liter, 170 hp, four-cylinder TDI clean diesel engine mated to a six-speed, double-clutch, automatic DSG transmission. The car is only slightly modified from stock with Pirelli racing tires, an on-board Race Data system, race suspension and brake components, drivers racing safety seat, FIA roll cage and an on-board fire extinguisher system. Series sponsors include: Pirelli, Bosch, ViON, Castrol, Oakley, Red Bull, Staubli, Aggreko, defNder, Lamin-X, Volkswagen Driver Gear, Volkswagen Parts & Service, iRacing, Safety-Kleen and Ringer Gloves.

I qualified in the second position at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course, and from my previous podium run at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah, I felt confident enough to fight for my first professional victory. It was awesome to be the only driver from Ohio, giving the spectators someone local to cheer for!

I pressured the leader for the second half of the race after pacing myself throughout the majority of the timed 30 minute event, in order to save my car for the end. He ended up making a slight mistake in the Keyhole corner and I was able to slip by with six laps to go and hang on for the win! It was a great victory ( ok, when isn't a victory "great" ), and a feeling I can't put into words...disbelief, awe, surrealism, and the reality setting in that I do have what it takes. The win back in June propelled me from 13th to 5th in the championship points standings.

More recently, this past weekend the season resumed from a 6 week summer break after Mid Ohio, where we traveled just outside of Chicago to Joliet, IL. The circuit was unusually long and technical, 3.5 miles in length and 21 turns total. I knew it was going to be tough to get all those corners down in just 30 minutes of practice. On Saturday morning it rained heavily, which meant we would swap the slick tires for the softer treaded tires which provide more traction in the wet. The session went well considering the conditions, I was just happy to keep the car out of the barriers! Qualifying was held later in the afternoon, which worked out as the rain had stopped and the track was fully dry. Right at the end of the session I just started to develop a rhythm on the track, with my last lap being a 2:46:7 (Yeah, almost 3 minutes to complete a lap here!) to place me 3rd on the grid. Certainly was happy with that time considering I would be starting ahead of the mid pack melee, and I knew there was more speed to be found out on the track.

Chasing down the leaders while fighting to maintain position
Sunday Morning, ahhhhh raceday! Always a mix of excitement and anticipation, along with a little nervousness and fear. It's what racing drivers, as well as all fellow adrenaline seekers know very well. As much as the media will try to question you about what your "strategy" for the race is going to be, you can never plan for what is going to happen, because you simply can't predict! I always try not to over analyze race start scenarios because it is worthless. What I was sure of was that I would be even quicker in the race once I felt like I had the track down 100%.

I got off to a good start when the lights went green, almost took second place into turn one but decided not to force the issue as the driver was looking to collide with me had I held my line. Settled into 3rd position and was feeling very 'in control' at this point. Just one lap into the race and the leader goes wide in turn one sending him back to 4th place. Two laps later I set up a pass for the lead by carrying more speed through the exit of turn 5, and taking the inside line away into turn 6 to complete the pass. Four laps into the race now and I'd built up about a 2.5 second lead over the second place and third place cars behind as they were battling hard with each other for the position, then the caution comes out and that lead was diminished. 10 minutes later after some terminally damaged cars were hauled off on the wrecker, the race resumed and I got a great restart. Immediately with over a two second lead, I was able to comfortably drive my pace and save the tires til the end without any pressure from the second and third place cars. A slightly more relaxed win from my first back at Mid Ohio needless to say.

2 in a row!
Six rounds of the ten race season are now in the books, and I find myself leading the championship. After each race I've been able to learn more about the cars, tracks, and competition. Thanks to the incredibly helpful driver coaches at Volkswagen, along with the mechanics who provide us with reliable, safe, and evening matched Jetta TDI's it has been a great learning experience so far and I honestly don't believe there's a better place for an up and coming racing driver to gain experience than in this series.

(August 1, 2010) – Series rookie, Wyatt Gooden, earned his second consecutive Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup victory today at Autobahn Country Club as he took the checkered flag in Round Six of ten races. Two more rookies rounded out the top-three as Jarvis Gennari earned his second top-five appearance of the season bringing his Jetta TDI Cup car home in second and Kevin Gleason, today’s polesitter, was just behind him in third place.

“I love the track here at Autobahn Country Club,” said Gooden. “The circuit is very challenging and there are a lot of great corners. I don’t really know what to say about the event, other than that it was a perfect weekend. I qualified third yesterday, so it was exciting to notch the win after having to make a few passes. Today was also a great race from the points perspective; I was able to earn some solid points and the guys ahead of me in the Championship finished further down the field, which helps me a lot. After winning two in a row, I can’t wait to get to Road America in a few weeks.”

Series veteran, Jake Thompson earned his fourth top-five result this morning as he finished fourth and AJ Nealey finished fifth.

With just four races left in the 2010 season, the points race remains tight with just 29 points separating the top-five drivers. After today’s win, Wyatt Gooden takes the lead in the Championship with 190 points. Arie Ouimet (R) retains his position of second place with 182 points, while Juan Pablo Sierra Lendle moves from first to third place after a twelfth place result today and ends up with 176 points. Jake Thompson moved into fourth place with 170 points and JD Mobley rounds out the top-five with 161. The Series goes to Wisconsin next as they will compete in Rounds Seven and Eight of the 2010 Jetta TDI Cup at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. on August 21st and 22nd.

A PHP Error was encountered

Severity: Notice

Message: Undefined property: stdClass::$title

Filename: views/rss.php

Line Number: 27

http://www.wyattgooden.com/en/blog/blog_post//2 http://www.wyattgooden.com/en/blog/blog_post//2 With just three weeks remaining until the series resumes for Round 6 at the Autobahn Country Club in Joliet IL, the anticipation is building for what promises to be a very exciting second half to the season. At 3.5 miles in length, Autobahn CC is the second longest circuit on the schedule, but arguably the most technical with 19 corners.

The Mid Ohio race last month really shook up the standings and allowed a few drivers, including myself, to close in on Juan Pablo Sierra Lendle’s massive points lead he had built through consistent podium finishes in the first 3 rounds. I knew that I had to pull it all together in Ohio if I wanted to keep my championship hopes alive, so that extra drive kept me focused all weekend. With many drivers ahead of me in points finishing just inside the top 10, winning the last round closed the points gap back up to a mere 28 points from the lead, and I’m currently sitting in 5th. A handful of rookies have been stepping it up showing good pace and consistency, as well as the 2nd and 3rd year veterans equally determined to win, making this is by far the most competitive season the TDI Cup has seen.

There are a number of strong drivers near the top of the points table, so my plan for the remaining half of the season is to consistently hit good qualifying laps, and finish on the podium. Staying out of trouble and driving smart is going to be crucial, as one DNF this late in the season could put anyone out of the running.
